Bite-Sized News

CIPCOH recently launched the One Hundred Million Mouths ProjectCIPCOH is committed to evolving the oral health curriculum in every health profession school/program in the U.S. As part of this effort, CIPCOH has created and launched a community of practice, the Oral Health Education Champion in six states. The goal of the project is to support the state champions in reaching out to health profession schools/programs in their state and engaging them to improve their oral health teaching. As those students and residents graduate and care for patients, they will improve the oral health of 100 million patients!

“A Two-Way Street: Primary Care and Oral Health Integration Training” was one of three sessions selected to be an ADEA Chair of the Board Symposia for the 2021 ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition being held in March. During this session, Drs. Jiang, Ticku, and Riedy will discuss the national trend in interprofessional education within dental schools, examine oral health curricula and entrustable professional activities (EPAs) in primary care training, and summarize integration of chronic medical conditions, behavioral health, social determinants of health, and team-based care into AEGD and GPR programs.

Lisa Simon, DMD14, MD20, was named a 2020 “Woman To Watch” for the Lucy Hobbs Project. The Lucy Hobbs Project was founded in honor of Lucy Hobbs, who was the first woman in dentistry. Each year, the Lucy Hobbs Project celebrates six women in dentistry, highlighting women who are driving change in the field of dentistry.

Initiative members Jane Barrow, Dr. Bruce Donoff, Dr. Hugh Silk, and Dr. Judith Haber contributed to a new white paper from the DentaQuest Partnership, titled, “A Three Domain Framework to Innovating Oral Health Care.” Read the paper here.

Drew Landrowski, a senior at the University of Chicago pursuing a B.S. in Neuroscience, was selected as a George E. Richmond Foundation RBH Oral Health Fellow and has been collaborating with CIPCOH team members Drs. Shenam Tiku, Christine Riedy, and Hugh Silk. In this role, she created a novel algorithm that used oral health data to compare state oral health infrastructure with respect to national averages to aid in the selection of pilot states for the “One Hundred Million Mouths Project”. She also designed outreach materials for this project.

Dr. Lisa Simon, Dr. Shenam Ticku, and Jane Barrow co-authored a project titled, “Dental care utilization in Massachusetts before and after initiation of Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT),” which received an honorable mention in the Johns Hopkins General Internal Medicine Housestaff Research Competition, and second-place runner up recognition in the American College of Physicians Massachusetts Chapter Research Competition.
