In 2017, CIPCOH surveyed 13 primary care professions to assess the state of oral health curricula in their respective training programs. A recent session at the ADEA Annual Meeting in Chicago focused on these findings, bringing together Maria Dolce, PhD, RN, CNE, FACHE, and Anita Duhl Glicken, MSW, executive director of the National Inter-professional Initiative, to facilitate a peer-reviewed small group discussion session titled, Cultivating Inter-professional Partners in Oral Health and Primary Care Integration. The educational session explored ways that dental schools can engage physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other health profession programs in inter-professional learning activities around oral health. A diverse group of stakeholders participated in this active discussion sharing challenges and new strategies to foster institutional and organizational collaborations to integrate oral health into primary care education and practice.

April 2, 2019 | Health Care For All
For far too long, oral health has been kept separate from overall health. The truth of the matter is that an infection of the mouth can affect the rest of the body. Dental infections and disease can lead to significant long-term effects on a person’s general health such as pain, systemic infections, hospitalizations, worsening of other medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and pre-term births.

As health care evolves with advances in science, medicine, and greater awareness of disparities, philanthropy’s role continues to evolve, too. Many funders, though, remain directly involved in health care through supporting expanded access to services, training health professionals, convening thought leaders to explore and scale innovative models, and advocating to influence public policy. Yet, we know health benefits and access to care are an essential but insufficient step toward improving population health.
