Oral health undeniably is linked to overall general health and oral disease is preventable. In currently configured healthcare delivery systems, oral health has been separated from primary care. In the last 20 years, significant attention and efforts have been directed toward the integration of oral health into primary care practice and the imperative to increase access to quality oral health, to increase early detection and prevention of oral disease, to reduce associated costs of oral disease and impacts on general health, and to improve oral and general health outcomes.
CIPCOH will serve as a national resource for systems-based research on oral health integration into primary care training with special emphasis on training enhancements that will advance the recruitment, training, and retention of primary care providers who are competent to deliver high quality, cost-effective, patient-centered oral health promotion and disease prevention that addresses oral health disparities and meets the unique needs of communities.
